Bu aşırılıkçı akımın, tabii ki asla izah etmeye ve ispatlamaya çalışmadığı birtakım dayanakları vardır. Galiba prensip ve varsayımları ispatlamaya isteksizlik, muhatapların sadece ilahiyat ve felsefe çevresi değil, halkın geneli olmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Ama aslında onların genel olarak dinler tarihi ve özelde de İbrahimî dinlerin teolojileri konusundaki bilgi ve vukufiyetinin çok az olduğu söylenebilir. Hulasa yeni ateistler, kendi temellerini kanıtlamaya girişmeksizin natüralist dünya görüşüne dayanarak, üstelik de onun en aşırı ve elimine edici türünü esas alıp evrim teorisi ve doğal seçilim gibi teorilere yaslanarak her şeye, bu cümleden olarak da dine ve dinî inançlara bilimsel ve doğal izah getirmektedir. Onları eleştirenler, felsefi prensipler ve dinler hakkındaki bilgisizliklerini vurgulayarak indirgemeci açıklamalar karşısında insandaki epistemik kuvvetler gibi yeteneklerin varlığına dikkat çekmekte ve yeni ateistlerin en önemli dayanaklarından biri olan natüralizmi hedef almakta, bunun ardından da onların bilim-din çelişkisine dair inancını tenkit etmektedir.
